Vrij Universiteit | Jelle van Baardewijk | 19 november | Op donderdag 20 december zal Jelle van Baardewijk promoveren aan de Vrije Universiteit. Om 15:45 uur verdedigt hij zijn proefschrift ‘The Moral Formation of Business Students: A philosophical and Empirical Investigation of the Business Student Ethos’. In zijn promotiewerk onderzoekt Van Baardewijk de morele houding die studenten bedrijfskunde in Nederland tijdens hun studie ontwikkelen. Het werk is een combinatie van historische analyse, filosofie en empirisch onderzoek.
De bijeenkomst vindt plaats in de aula van de VU, De Boelelaan 1105, Amsterdam. Aansluitend aan de verdediging is er een receptie.
Eerder op de dag zal Lisa Herzog, onderdeel van de commissie van Van Baardewijk, een lezing verzorgen over ‘Recognition and economic structures’. Dit is in lijn met een paper dat recent van haar hand is verschenen. Hieronder het abstract van dat paper.
Abstract: The paper discusses the relation between recognition and economic structures, starting from Adam Smith’s recognition-based understanding of human self-interest, which was lost in later economic theories. It explores some strands of economic thinking that retain a connection to recognition theories, as well as Axel Honneth’s discussion of markets from the perspective of social freedom. It defends the claim that a return to the recognition-based roots of economic thinking holds enormous potential for thinking about reforms of our economic structures towards a more egalitarian and democratic economic system.
